Underemployed
05:56
|

Aniversario could be the number
As long as you make it on May 23
Every reminder shines back like a mirror
Every direction’s directed at me
Baby Doll
I’m underemployed and I can’t find the money
Baby Doll
I’m sorry I called
I was stuck in a rut and I had to do something
Now I’lll never know you at all
And that sure leaves me blue, Baby Doll
Tap on these points while she gives you the mantra
As long as there’s time and some money to spend
Scene of the fear and the family of origin
But you’ll never be with your true love again
Baby Doll
I’m underemployed and I can’t find the money
Baby Doll
I’m sorry I called
I was stuck in a rut and I had to do something
Now I’ll never know you at all
And that sure leaves me blue, Baby Doll
Goddamn the teachers who told us the story
Mark of the Beast and the judgement to come
Now that I’m older I rarely believe it
I know how it looks when a world comes undone
I’ve got an uncle who’s working on dying
Leaving this life from a nursing home bed
Deep in his heart do you think he remembers
A sunny boat ride or the mean things she said
Baby Doll
I’m underemployed and I can’t find the money
Baby Doll
I’m sorry I called
I was stuck in a rut and I had to so something
Now I’ll never know you at all
And that sure leaves me blue, Baby Doll
Aniversario sounds like a number
Make it October not May 23
And trade these reminders for turquoise and silver
And every direction that’s open to me
Baby Doll
I’m underemployed and I can’t find the money
Baby Doll
I’m sorry I called
I was stuck in a rut and I had to do something
Now I’ll never know you at all
And that sure leaves me blue, Baby Doll

The Wheels Rolled North
08:07
|
|||
Kaitlyn and Joey were sitting on the stairs leading down to the bowling alley.
Talking low to one another on a soft night in the North Country.
Kate said Joe I think I may be a lesbian.
Joe said it did not matter to him.
I’ll love you forever that’s the way it has to be.
And the Wheels rolled north,
Way up north into Calgary,
Searching for something he did not want to know.
And the Snake danced slowly
With a shy, awkward girl.
Because there’s no one in this world who’s better off left alone.
Kate put a match to another Camel light and she said Joe
I’m awful scared of dying.
Joe said Kate honey child baby doll why’re you always wasting you time?
She said don’t it ever feel like sometime there’s not a thing in the world worth trying?
And he knew right then and there he’d have to walk a very tight line.
And the Wheels rolled north,
Way up north into Calgary,
Searching for something he did not want to know.
And the Snake danced slowly
With a shy, awkward girl.
Because there’s no one in this world who’s better off left alone.
Kate kept talking on and on about eternity.
Joe got a fast instinct to flee,
But he fell down when he got up to leave.
He came to with his head in her lap.
She’s said you're ok Joe you just passed out. You’re safe here with me.
And Joe knew all about forever, knew all about right now.
And they’d make it through whatever, make it through somehow.
And he’d love her forever that’s the way it had to be.
And the Wheels rolled north,
Way up north into Calgary,
Searching for something he did not want to know.
And the Snake danced slowly
With a shy, awkward girl.
Because there’s no one in this world who’s better off left alone.
There’s no one in this world who’s better off left alone.

Ira Clyde's Impala
05:16
|
|||
Left Lafayette County heading for Louisiana
We were after lunch in leaving
Cause we all got drunk last night
I’m glad I was a Christian and I’d asked my Lord’s forgiveness
He delivered me to heaven
In a ray of blazing light
Now my life is just a memory
My life is just a memory
Somewhere in my darling’s eyes
Ellen was my darling and I guess we planned to marry
I had spent up all of my money
But she loved me just the same
Her mom and dad were Catholic and my people wouldn’t have it
So we talked about New Orleans
And a life down there to claim
We’d start a band there
She’d write a novel
We’d live happily ever after
And we could make love all the time
We hit the Lakeside Grocery
And we got some Cokes for mixing
And we sang a song together
Take us out of Harmontown
We were way up on this highway
When this car came up behind me
Just some kids from Marshall County that I’d known from time to time
We started racing
We started racing and the night was coming on
I had a new Impala
Super Sport is what you called it
And it had a big block motor, yeah the fastest thing around
They knew they couldn’t beat me
No, I think they liked to see me
Gun that motor up to ninety or a hundred maybe more
Ellen didn’t like it
She started crying
Said “Ira Clyde slow this thing down”
My daddy was a hunter but I never liked the killing
But sometimes I’d go with him
Pass the bottle in the woods
The stories that he told me
The love he tried to show me
If I’d have got much older I may have understood
But the deer there on the highway
It came crashing through the trees there
And my Impala ran him down
See, I always was a driver
And the road was where you found me
In the cafes and the truck stops men were talking about my skills
I bet they’re down at Jackson’s and coffee’s what they’re having
And I bet that they’re all talking about the day they found me killed
And the belt that saved poor Ellen
As I went roaring off to Heaven
And the Big Block Motor Sound

Grenada Stars
03:13
|
|||
We rode out to Donna’s house
We rode out there and turned around
All her bedroom lights were on
The lights were on but her car was gone
We stopped in a late night spot
Late night coffee was all we got
We hung around and we had a smoke
And ordered up a cup to go
We went by to see my buddy Shane
He lives way out on Cooley
He said he’d like to take a ride
His wife got mad but that’s all right
We parked out by the spillway lights
Where I wrecked Robert’s back that night
Steve Earle singing “Number 29”
And he sang that one about “The Other Kind”
We lit smokes, passed the match around
We loaded up and headed back to town
And We felt just like Neal and Jack
Shane’s wife got mad when we brought him back
All the stars in Grenada
Are slowly falling down
All the stars in Grenada
Are slowly burning out
Make a wish on Grenada stars
Make a wish on Grenada stars

I don’t like staying home at night
But I’m so tired of the crowd
I’d rather run the streets with you
And watch all our dreams shake out
Under Western skies
Over big sky lines
You and Me and the American Night
You and Me and the American Night
In a safe motel I can hold you close
You can show me how you feel
I want to tell you what I want
And I want your kisses still
Under Western skies
Over big sky lines
You and Me and the American Night
You and Me and the American Night
Do you keep a picture of our love with you?
Does your heart tell you the picture is still true?
When I’m laying down at night
Afraid of endless sleep
I dream about you next to me
And everything we’ll see
Under Western skies
Over big sky lines
You and Me and the American Night
You and Me and the American Night

Flyways

Baby called me from Colorado
She’s been gone for seven weeks or more
Never knew I could miss somebody
Never found a love that won’t let go
I’m always on that forty
And those big wheels sure are running slow
I may be a vagabond but
Her love’s the only home I know
Oh Highways
Yeah Flyways
Oh please bring her my way
Oh won’t you please roll steady yeah
Bring my baby home
One week don’t make a drifter
But I don’t intend to drift for long
But they daylight’s hard to find when
The nighttime call it sounds so strong
Thank God and the airwaves clear yeah
My baby’s coming through the stars
She says the sweetest things yeah
And it makes the lonely not so hard
Oh Highways
Oh Flyways
Oh please bring her my way
Oh won’t you please roll steady yeah
Bring my baby home
One more morning and the countdown starts
One day closer to my baby’s arms
A love so real and a love so right
Know I’m always going to treat her nice
I’m winging it to Colorado
Bless the pilot driving through the sky
Let the world call me a dreamer
Bless the woman standing by my side
Oh Highways
Yeah Flyways
Oh please bring her my way
Oh eon’t you please roll steady yeah
Bring my baby home
Hey won’t you please roll steady yeah
Bring my baby home
Hey won’t you please roll steady yeah
Bring my baby home

Sarah and Jackson make an awful nice couple
Sometimes I can’t help kind of living through them
My girl Pinball worked up across the street
But I ain’t seen her lately I don’t know where she’s been
All of my old friends they got married
They’ve got families and they’ve got homes
Me and my new friends we have a lot fun
We hang out at the bar We usually go home alone
I got it bad boy
Yeah I got it bad boy
Hey hey we all want to fall in love
Hey hey we all want to fall in love
There’s this girl in Brooklyn and she’s so pretty
She’s so smart but she’s so far away
When I was younger I could have handled the distance
But now that I’m older I need love every day
Because down in Memphis it’s getting awful lonely
And I see all the fellas out with their dark haired dolls
And I’d like to say hey man where did you find her
And where can I get one and who can I call
I got it bad boy
Yeah I got it bad boy
Hey hey we all want to fall in love
Hey hey we all want to fall in love
Two years ago I thought it was perfect
I thought it was magic and aw I was wrong
Two years of wondering and two years of wishing
And still I don’t know what it was I might have done
Except that one time she told me that she was a movie
And movies don’t show you what happens after then
And I guess that was right but I hoped it was wrong
And in spite of all that I’d still try it again
I got it bad boy
Yeah I got it bad boy
Hey hey we all want to fall in love
Hey hey we all want to fall in love
Hey hey we all want to fall in love
On a Saturday night in Nashville darling
Hey Hey we all want to fall in love
